Organic beats, cabbage, spinach, tomatoes, zucchini, cucumbers… This vegetable medley and much more is seasonally available at Shamrock Farm each Saturday at the Binford Farmers Market. Shamrock Farm is an organically certified four acre farm in Arlington, IN owned by Eric and Christine Murphy. Three years ago Eric began growing chemical free Chiogga beats for Green B.E.A.N delivery and then added more varieties of vegetables each following year. This year they built a mushroom cave and now have shitake mushrooms available. Several people within the local community work at Shamrock, helping to tend and harvest the weekly crop.
In addition to Binford Market, the produce of Shamrock farms is available at multiple grocery stores, through two online delivery sites, and in the tasty creations of many local chefs. The organic cabbage is a key ingredient in the cultured vegetables made by two local businesses that provide a variety of fermented foods.
While it is a constant challenge to maintain balance between family life and the demands of farming, Eric finds great satisfaction in the many aspects of his work; such as the amazement of how a large plant producing 30 to 40 pounds of zucchini can all come from one small seed. He also greatly enjoys interacting with people at the market: answering questions, sharing recipes and ideas, and hearing the stories of his customers in how their health and lives have been positively impacted by eating organically.
