Whether you are a veteran farmers market shopper or a first timer, you should consider asking these questions of any farmer offering produce.
1. What variety is this [insert fruit or vegetable name here]?
The answer to this question will help you become more informed about the varieties of fruits and vegetables grown in your area and reveal the most common (and uncommon) varieties you can buy at the market.
2. Were chemicals used on these [insert fruit or vegetable name here]?
“No.” is often the best answer to this question, but there are a wide variety of answers ranging from regular pesticide use to sparing early spring spraying of vulnerable varieties. There are also organic pesticides, so there is a difference between “organic” and “chemical-free”. You have to decide what level is acceptable to you.
3. I’ve never tried [insert fruit or vegetable name here]. What should I do with it?
Take a risk and ask about something you’ve never tried. It won’t make you look stupid. It will make you look like a new customer that might buy that thing again if you get a good answer to this question.
